About

Lucy Burton is a multidisciplinary artist from Indianapolis, IN currently residing in San Antonio, TX. She received her BFA in Fibers from Indiana University. As an enjoyer of tedium, she groks with many of the traditional processes under the fiber arts umbrella; but as an enjoyer of novelty, she prefers to express her work using unconventional materials. Weaving using fishing line, as an example. While her medium often shifts depending on the content of the piece, this frame of tedium and novelty applies across her practice.

Many of the ideas Burton espouses come from threads of ideas in the work of others. With two literary namesakes, and readers for parents, it is often in the collected words of another where she will snag on a notion worth exploring. She uses both materials and imagery as her data for communicating these explorations, each responding to the call of the work.

Burton is currently interested in the idea of our finitude as humans in an age which seems to encourage us to stretch ourselves to infinity. She is interested in the structures, rhythms, and proclivities which foster this culture, and the all important question of why? Why do we want to do, and to have it all? Why do we desire infinity? And is it what we were made for?
